People in Leeds are coming together to change how we think and act about mental health

Leeds is one of the first Time to Change hubs in England, a new partnership of local organisations and mental health champions committed to improving local attitudes and behaviours towards people experiencing mental health problems.

Time to Change Leeds is led by the Leeds Health and Wellbeing Board and is a partnership between Space2,  Leeds City Council,  Leeds Mind (and Mindful Employer), Touchstone and West Yorkshire Police, as well as local Time to Change champions and regional co-ordinators.

Champions

The Time to Change Leeds Hub believe that people with their own experience of mental health problems (also known as lived experience) should be leading activity around combating stigma and discrimination experienced by those with mental health problems.

If you are passionate about ending mental health stigma, and would like to be involved in the Hub, you can find out more and sign up to be a Champion at www.time-to-change.org.uk/champions

Champions Fund

World Mental Health Day  the Champions Fund was launched. Champions in Leeds will be able to apply for up to £500 to fund anti-stigma activities in their own communities using social contact. Find out what social contact is?.

Want to apply for the Champion Fund but need some help with ideas?

Gipton Fire Station Museum and Gallery

Welcome to our Smart Gallery @ Gipton Fire Station Museum & Gallery @ The Old Fire Station in Gipton

Gipton Fire Station has been renovated into a fantastic multipurpose community hub. Providing a base for six local charities, along with rooms available to hire, a cookery school and a café for all of the community to enjoy!

For 78 Year the Fire Station was at the heart of the community of Gipton. Come along to the Space2’s Pop up Museum at The Old Fire Station in Gipton and learn about this building’s history. Share your stories, pictures or memories linked to the Fire Station with us. Everything is considered for display and the entire exhibition depends on people’s desire to share with other museum visitors their special possessions.  Artefacts with a back-story are especially welcome. You will be invited to label and help to display your object, and of course have a photograph taken with it in pride of place in the gallery.

Smart Gallery (Social Museum and Art Gallery) is the brain child of Helen Peyton and  is a unique collection of works curated by the public.  If you live or work in Gipton, now or in the past, this is your chance to influence what exhibits are on show.

Visitors and exhibitors are encouraged to stay as long as they want to share their stories with Jane and Helen and the volunteers or to  work alongside artist in residence Helen Peyton to make their own artworks inspired by the displays – perhaps it will be a drawing, or a print. And if you don’t want to take home your newly created work, then into the display it goes!

Pop-up Museum at Old Fire Station in Gipton

Meeting every Monday morning from 5 June Between 9 am – 11am at Wykebeck Primary School in the Dame Fanny Waterman centre.
It’s time to don your Indiana Jones hats – helping us to create a Museum at the Fire Station in September 2017 housing your collection of stories and artefacts all about Gipton Fire Station.
We need people who would like to learn how to become community researchers to help fill the museum. Talking with local people to collect stories and artefacts; learning how to look through the archives, and how to look after the objects. Who knows what we could find!
We will work with West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Leeds Museum and Galleries Service, Leeds Libraries , West Yorkshire Archive to help us find the gems – untold stories , photographs, memories.
We are also creating to pop up museums in Saint Nicholas Catholic Primary School and Wykebeck Primary School After School .
If you are interested still please email me or call me, if you can not come and join us on a Monday morning maybe we can come and meet you.
Jane Moreland will be leading the community research group.
